“I’d been wanting to try a solar powered hat for some time but the price put me off. When the Amazon price was cut in half I couldn’t resist. Mine arrived today and I tested it. The fan stirs up just enough breeze on the center of the forehead to give you evaporative cooling on a hot, still, dry, central Texas day. I have fair skin and like many men my age also “have a hole in my haircut,” making me susceptible to sunburn and maybe future melanoma. The hat itself is made of shellacked woven fiber that shades the head but also lets air in and out through the tiny open pores. It is the perfect combination of shade and ventilation, and is very lightweight. The internal suspension band is Velcro adjustable and will easily accommodate the largest head size. The central brow portion of the band is covered with a porous sweat absorber, a small but nice touch.
For the price, and a good compromise between lightweight and fan powered cooling, this hat is about as good as you’re going to get.

By the way, this hat is patterned after pith helmets, in which the larger portion of the brim shades the neck and the smaller part with the “cross-strap” shades the eyes and face. The hat is actually being worn backwards if it is turned with the fan is at the front and blowing on the brow. Distributed Generation War – Tradition Or Innovation? Sun Shines?

 A major advantage with solar energy or other renewable energy sources is that it never runs out and therefore sustainable. Renewable energy facilities generally require less maintenance than traditional generators. Even more importantly, renewable energy produces little or no waste and harmful products. Green Energy projects can also bring economic benefits.

However, there are few drawbacks which cannot be ignored with renewable energy. One disadvantage with renewable energy is that it is difficult to generate the quantities of electricity that are as large as those produced by traditional fossil fuel generators. But this shouldn’t be a major factor for residential applications. Another disadvantage of renewable energy sources is the reliability of supply. Renewable energy often relies on the weather for its source of power and this can be unpredictable and inconsistent. The initial cost of renewable energy technology is bit high.

Despite the above mentioned drawbacks, renewable energy sources are gaining popularity as drawbacks can be nullified by using one source in complement with the other. Among the most popular renewable energy sources, Hydro generators need flowing water and are not suitable for residential applications. Wind turbines need strong wind to turn the blades, can be noisy and require a large open space and may not suit many locations but are still the first choice where frequent strong winds exist. Even though solar arrays need bright sunshine to produce electricity, storage batteries will help during non sunny days. Fuel cells are more popular in rural areas. Considering all the factors and weighing all renewable energy sources that can power your home on an equal scale, solar energy stands out tall!

Solar Energy Storage and System Maintenance

Home solar system requires periodic inspections and routine maintenance whether it’s used as solar water heater or as a solar power house. Solar panels , pump, collectors, battery bank, wiring all should be taken care of. In a nutshell, solar system installation doesn’t end your job!

Solar water heaters: keep note of the following when it comes to your solar heating system maintenance :

  1. Collectors and storage systems
  2. Collectors have to be visually checked for any predominant shading and storage tanks also need a visual check of cracks, leaks, rust or any other signs of corrosion. Periodical cleansing of dust filled collectors is advisable.

  3. Channels and wiring connections
  4. Keep an eye on any damage or degradation of insulation, break in the connections and seals of all the channels and wiring. Mineral accumulation, if any need to be removed from the channels every few years. All wiring connections should be tight.

  5. Fixtures and holdings
  6.  All fixtures and holdings have to be tight and rightly placed at all times.

  7. Pumps
  8. Periodically verify that the distribution pumps are functioning.

  9. Antifreeze agents
  10. Antifreeze agents like aqueous glycol solutions used in the solar collectors have to be replaced periodically.

Solar Lighting Systems: keep note of the following when it comes to your solar lighting system maintenance:

  1. Solar Panels
  2. Solar panels are now developed from strong unbreakable materials, so a solar panel itself requires minimal maintenance to continue doing its job. Essentially the only breakable part of a solar panel is the glass covering. Maintaining a solar panel is very simple. A Solar panel needs to be clean for it to operate at its rated capacity. So, clean the surface of a solar panel with warm water and dishwashing soap to remove any accumulation of dirt, debris, grime, bird droppings, etc. Well maintained Solar panels will last for more than 20 years.

  3. Batteries
  4.  Batteries in PV systems can be very dangerous because of the energy they store and the acidic electrolytes they contain, so a well-ventilated, non-metallic enclosure for the batteries is advisable. PV batteries generally have to discharge a smaller current for a longer period. The most commonly used deep-cycle batteries are lead-acid batteries and nickel-cadmium batteries. Nickel-cadmium batteries are more expensive but are durable and can be discharged close to 100 % without harm whereas lead-acid batteries can’t be discharged 100 percent without seriously shortening battery life. Charge controllers protect batteries from overcharging or draining out, so the use of a charge controller is essential for long battery life. Replace the batteries after few years of use.

  5. Wiring
  6. When following the electrical plans for solar system be sure that your cable wire is of the right size or gauge and of right length. Too much of a mismatch in wire’s length and thickness can even cause fire. All wiring connections should be tight.

  7. Inverter
  8. Replace the inverter after about 10 years.

  9. Fixtures and holdings
  10. All fixtures and holdings have to be tight and rightly placed at all times.

ROI – How Soon Does the Sun on Your Roof Bring Radiance?

Let’s estimate the return on investment:

  1. Consider average kWh required per day = 30 kWh/day
  2. Assume average sunlight intensity = 5 sun hours
  3. If you want to cover 100 % of your electricity bills, then coverage =100%
  4. Solar system efficiency constant = 75 %

Now, Solar Array Size in kW = [(Your kWh/day) / (Sun Hours/day)] * [(coverage) / (efficiency constant)]
Solar Array Size = [30/5]*[1/0.75] = 8 kW

Assume an average cost of solar panel installation = $8/watt

Estimated Solar Array Cost = Your Array Size in kW * (1,000 w/kW) * ($8/w)
                                                         = 8 * 1000 * 8

                   Hence Estimated Solar Array Cost = $ 64000

Assume solar incentives, rebates, tax credits = 50% of total cost

Therefore, Estimated Solar Array Cost = $ 32000
Electricity rates vary widely.  Usual rates range from 5¢ to 50¢ per kWh. The average cost of residential electricity was 12¢/kWh in the U.S. in April 2009, and ranged from 7¢ in North Dakota to 26¢ in Hawaii.

So, let’s assume an average of 15¢/kWh for our calculation purpose.

In our solar array cost estimation we had assumed an average 30 kWh required per day [that means 900 kWh/month]

So, monthly electricity bill = monthly kWh consumption*cost per kWh

                                                = 900 kWh *15¢/kWh

So, monthly electricity bill = $135

Annual electricity bill = $ 1620

Time period required to get back the invested capital or payback period = invested capital/annual profits (savings) = $ 32000/$1620 =19.75

So, your home solar system needs 20 years to bring back your invested capital of $32000 to save an electricity bill of $1620 annually! 21st year onwards, sun on your roof will bring your home, the radiance desired!

Let’s suppose, you only want to cover 50% of your electricity bills by installing solar power system.

In that case, your solar array cost = $ 16000[$ 32000/2] and your electricity bill amount saved per annum = $810 [$1620/2]

So, payback period = $16000/$810 = 19.75 years

Payback period doesn’t change as we are actually dividing both the numerator and the denominator by two. So, you will still need 20 years to recover you investment but the actual investment itself is reduced by half and remember in this case you are still connected with the electric grid provided by your electric company.

Going for the solar energy or any other clean energy source is a long term game and only a marathon runner will sustain the pain and persistence.
