There are two main types of solar power, solar thermal and photovoltaic. Solar thermal uses the sun light’s infrared energy to either heat a liquid or to warm a mass of material that will later on release its stored heat. Harnessing solar thermal energy involves building a house in such a way to collect the sun’s heat during the day and radiate it into the home during the evening. However, in the summer time the house’s construction uses mass to keep the sun’s heat out of the home.
Solar photovoltaic energy converting sun light into electrical energy. The most commonly associated component are the photovoltaic panels or solar panels that you see mounted on roofs.
This article will be focusing on how photovoltaic solar power (solar panels) and systems work.

The thing to know with solar panels are that they cannot be shut down – they are ALWAYS ENERGIZED. And they are energized with up to 600 volts of DC current. For example, you cannot put an ax through them to open up a roof to vent – your putting the ax through 600 volts.

// By: Catherine Corley (Vice President of Strategy, Sam’s Club) In recent years, the notion of a “green economy” has gathered steam. The conversation accelerated when the economy worsened and unemployment rose and suddenly, a green economy was seen by many as a pathway out of the current economic situation. Studies in 2008 found that [...]

President Barack Obama will visit Arcadia Tuesday morning for a speech and a tour of the DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center.
The energy center is the largest solar photovoltaic plant in the country, producing 42,000 megawatt-hours or enough power to serve about 3,000 homes annually. Photovoltaic technology is the process of using solar cells for energy by converting solar energy — sunlight, including ultra violet radiation — directly into electricity. Construction on the facility began in late 2008 and was completed earlier this month. The plant consists of more than 90,500 solar panels and will go live this week, according to Buck Martinez, senior director of project development for FPL.

When the electrical utility bill is increasing each and every month you can do a few things. You can cry and pull out your hair; refuse to pay and get cut off and have no utilities; you could work harder and more hours each month to keep up the rising costs; or you could invest in other alternative sources of energy to cut the electrical utility bill. One of these alternative sources of energy is solar energy. And indeed, you will need to invest that means putting in your own (or borrowed) money, but the investment can make a huge difference for now and many years to come.

Solar power energy systems are not inexpensive. That said it’s important to compare them within context of other types of home improvement projects. Home buyers and realtors view a solar photovoltaic or solar hot water heating system as a significant value-added improvement – similar to adding a deck or remodeling your kitchen. Plus unlike a deck or kitchen remodel, you also gain one-up on your power bills. Here are some ways to estimate the cost of a solar photovoltaic or solar thermal system.
